Potrebbe essere il titolo di un film documentario. I contenuti non mancherebbero di certo. Nel 2004 Trieste è stata candidata ad ospitare l’Esposizione Universale 2008, meglio conosciuta come EXPO 2008. Partecipai in qualità di responsabile giovanile del Comitato Pro Trieste Expo, creatosi per dar appoggio a questa candidatura, organizzando diversi incontri con un totale di oltre un migliaio di ragazzi, 
perolpiù studenti delle scuole superiori, miei coetani. Insieme ad altri ragazzi creammo un’odata di entusiasmo e di informazione (così venne definita la nostra azione ndr.) che coinvolse appunto centinaia e centinaia di studenti e triestini, entusiasti dell’occasione. Non si doveva perdere, tutti erano daccordo. Una sfida non facile ma affrontata con il giusto entusiasmo da tutta la città. Il verdetto fu diverso dalle aspettative. A Parigi arivammo con un entusiasmo incontenibile tutti insieme: c’erano politici, ministri, sottosegretari, sindaco, autorevoli esponenti del mondo scientifico, troup di giornalisti, semplici cittadini e tanti ragazzi. Ma tutti lì eravamo sullo stesso piano, nello stesso albergo, con lo stesso obiettivo. Il tutto però fini nel pomeriggio quando il verdetto vide Saragozza vincere la competizione, con un buon distacco rispetto a Trieste. La situazione tramutò, ognuno per i fatti suoi. Addio tutto e tutti. Ritornando con un caro amico verso Trieste pensai che tutto il lavoro fatto non doveva essere perso. Se a Trieste avevamo creato qualcosa di straordinario in favore della nostra città, a Saragozza gli studenti protestavano contro un Expo speculativo che avrebbe rovinato la loro città, scegliendo di non apoggiare la candidatura ma anzi prendendo con noi contatto via mail.
La loro era un’azione importante e grandiosa. Il giornale Il Piccolo di questo non scrisse, scrisse però, per oltre 10 giorni, dell’argomento post-vittoria, intervistando l’uno e l’altro politico di turno…ma a noi nessuno chiese niente. Si sa i giovani sono utili quando lavorano, quando devono parlare è meglio che tacciano. Non persi l’entusiasmo e dopo alcuni anni scelesi di mettermi al servizio della comunità partendo dalla Circoscrizione. Il resto è cronaca quotidiana. Il pensiero dell’Expo me lo sono portato dietro riproponendo la candidatura per l’esposizione del 2012. Ho seguito con attenzione la candidatura di Milano all’Esposizione Internazione (diversa da quella triestina) e i lavori di adeguamento per l’Esposizione in Spagna. Oggi siamo arrivati ad un mese esatto dall’inaugurazione di quest’ultima, a Saragozza. Il padiglione italiano è quasi pronto, ancora quale rifinitura e sarà visitabile tra 30 giorni. Una curiosità che di certo deve far riflettere: tra le Regioni italiane coinvolte nelle attività della nostra struttra nazionale manca il Friuli Venezia Giulia. E sì che con l’Expo 2008 di certo centrava, eccome che centrava. Sembra proprio che l’entusiasmo, il buon lavoro, la gioia e la speranza che aveva unita tanta gente sia stata dimenticata. Trieste è stata dimenticata.

Io c’ero quel giorno a Parigi e ci credevo.Trieste meritava l’EXPO’sia per il tema proposto che per la localizzazione.Il Porto Vecchio recuperato era un sogno che sembrava realizzabile.Ricordo la presentazione, l’entusiasmo e soprattutto i volti gioiosi dei ragazzi del Collegio del Mondo Unito. Durissimo digerire la sconfitta,soprattutto per le motivazioni.Evidentemente di”unito” della nostra città veniva percepito all’esterno solo quell’aspetto gioioso dei ragazzi. Come me tanti avevano sperato.Molto di più han potuto le “baruffe” quotidiane, quei panni sporchi mai lavati in casa. Dove sono adesso tutti coloro che non si accontentano del marciapiede riparato o delle violette che fanno bella mostra di sè fra i sassi di fiume davanti a piazza Unità? La maggioranza dei triestini guarda avanti o rimane estasiata a guardare i delfini di bosso davanti alla pescheria?

Ma Eliana, il porto vecchio fa parte del porto franco internazionale ed e’ soggetto a vincoli di utilizzo. E’ mai possibile che i politici di Trieste (dipendenti da partiti italiani) insistono con progetti di riuso del porto vecchio, finalizzati a speculazioni edilizie, invece di farlo funzionare per i tarffici mercantili come prevede il trattato di pace e come e’ sempre stato dai tempi dell’Austria?
E’ uno sconcio lasciare il porto vecchio in quelle condizioni, ma la soluzione e’ quella di rimettere in funzione l’attivita’ portuale, e rimettere nuove gru e far arrivare le navi, visti anche i grandi fondali. Forse se per l’Expo si fosse scelta un’altra aerea, si poteva vincere, ma l’Expo invece era solo uno strumento per distruggere definitivamente il porto franco e approppriarsi di un’area internazionale extra territoriale. E’ probabile che al Bie queste cose le sapevano e puo’ darsi che non hanno potuto assegnare l’expo a Trieste proprio per motivi giuridici.
